Elf on the Shelf Birthday Tradition & Niche Parent Party!

This past Saturday I learned two new things; how the Elf on the Shelf tradition was started and the how the new Elf on the Shelf Birthday tradition works.

For the last few years, I would see the Elf in my Facebook & IG timelines doing funny things. The children would always appear amazed each morning when they woke up. I still never knew what the elf was actually doing or why. I wanted to participate but I just never took the time to get the book and see how it worked.

Well, lucky me! On Saturday, I attended an Elf on the Shelf Birthday Tradition Party hosted by Nadia, founder of  Niche Parent at A Piece of Cake here in Atlanta. The co-creator, Chanda A. Bell was so transparent with the bloggers. She shared how started with her credit cards and the growing pains it took to get where she is now (millions sold). I learned the story of the Elf on the Shelf which almost made me wish Christmas was around the corner.

What’s new with the Elf? The Elf makes people smile from Thanksgiving until Christmas but now you can see more of the Elf on your birthday! The Elf on the Shelf: A Birthday Tradition is here. What’s the catch? It’s for 24 hours only! The next birthday in my house is in December, so I need to plan this thing out.

The Elf on the Shelf®: A Birthday Tradition tells the little-known story of the North Pole birthday tradition, and includes special instructions for families to invite their scout elf for a birthday visit. In Santa’s Christmas village, the scout elves have their own special way of celebrating birthdays—a tradition that goes back thousands of years. Now, at the request of children around the world, Santa has given special permission for his scout elves to share that tradition with the families who love them. But a scout elf cannot come to a birthday party unless it is invited. The Elf on the Shelf birthday book also includes a special Claus Couture Collection® birthday outfit just for the scout elf.  Source

Disclaimer: I was gifted an Elf on the Shelf: A Birthday Tradition, but all thoughts are my own.

National Heatstroke Prevention Day |5 Tips to Keep Kids Safe

I didn’t know that July 31st is National Heatstroke Prevention Day. It seems that every year more children are being left in hot cars and no matter how much news coverage and tragic stories, parents still seem to do it.

To help address this issue, Ford Motor Company is supporting the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s efforts to tackle the alarming safety threat that heatstroke poses for young children left in hot cars.

Did you know?

  • Last year alone, 44 children in the United States lost their lives after being left in unattended motor vehicles.
  • More than half (52%) of kids who died from vehicular heatstroke were “forgotten” by their caregiver
  • A child’s temp can heat up to 5 times faster than an adult’s on a hot day
  • Studies show that when the temperature outside is 90 degrees the temperature inside a parked car can rise to 109 degrees in 10 minutes, 119 degrees in 20 minutes and 124 degrees in 30 minutes.

As summer temperatures rise, here are a few simple tips for parents and childcare providers to keep kids safe inside of vehicles:

  1. Never leave infants or children alone in a parked car, even if the windows are partially open
  2. Make sure the safety seat and safety belt buckles aren’t too hot before securing a child in a restraint system
  3. Don’t ever leave sleeping infants in the car
  4. Be sure to check the front and back seats of a vehicle before locking it and walking away
  5. Lock your car when you’re not in it, so kids can’t get in on their own

Along with NHTSA, state and other safety partners, join Ford in a campaign to keep kids safe inside of vehicles – especially during the hot summer months!

Tamar & Trina Braxton On Sisterhood & Gain Flings! {$25 Giveaway}

While at the Essence Festival this July, I attended a party hosted by My Black is Beautiful, Gain & The Braxton sisters! Gain has finally unveiled its new first ever single use detergent, Gain Flings. The Braxtons are officially ambassadors of Gain Flings and I was able to take a few minutes to see why Tamar & Trina Braxton believe this product is Music To Your Nose.

Me and the BraxtonsTamar, how does Gain Flings tie into your day-to-day life?  Tamar: I do not do laundry! I can’t iron to this day. It makes it easy for me because I like things that smell good. Candles, Etc. Gain smells amazing. I throw my shirt in there with the fling and my clothes smell amazing. I use it often.

Trina, how did the partnership happen with Gain? Trina: This is our 4th year at Essence, and in the past we would go visit the MBIB Booth and see Gain. We would always tell them how good they smell and how we use it. They thought it would be a great marriage because we would be promoting a product we already use, so the partnership was very organic. We actually use it and love it.

Tamar & Trina, tell us something people don’t know about you? TamarBelieve it or not, I am very domestic. I cook and take care of my man. I am very old school. I was raised in a southern household and raised as southern women. I 100% take care of my man. They think I push him around, tell him what to do, no ma’am! I make sure he’s taken care of. Trina: I am more than just a glass of wine. I have a business mind that will make the horses come home. I am very entrepreneurial. We opened our first Bar Chix location in Duluth and the Trina Braxton hair collection, TractHer Trail Her, is now available online. I am also doing another (scripted) Television show coming soon.

Tamar, What does Sisterhood mean to you? Tamar: Sisterhood means everything to me: keeping a secret, being there for each other, telling the truth when a sister doesn’t want to hear it. DO it in a way that is respectful. I am a girl’s girl, I am all for women’s empowerment, but my delivery and approach wasn’t doing anything for my sisters but pushing them away from me. I had to look at the way I say things or not say anything at all. You have to respect each other as women, mothers and wives!!

Gain flings! is available at local retailers and nationwide in 57, 66, 72, 77 and 90-ct tubs as well as 14, 16, 31 and 35-ct bags. Simple Summer Series #3 : Benefits of Biking w/ the Babies

10169290_10203150343953005_3260483702776640810_nSummer is in full effect and the kids love the outdoors. Last year my two oldest children learned to ride their bikes, and as you can guess, they want to ride them all the time.

I am thankful for a neighborhood with side walks. We can ride around our whole subdivision and I don’t have to worry about them riding in the street, unless I am with them. I did catch my son riding in the street, like he was grown one evening. That didn’t end well for him!

Bailee and bike

For Mother’s Day, my family bought me a bike! I was so excited and use it often. My children and I like to ride around our neighborhood together in the evening after dinner or early morning (weekends) before breakfast.

Here are a few benefits to bike riding with your children:

  • Improve your fitness: bike riding tones the booty, thighs, tummy and reduces cellulite.
  • Relationship: the interaction improves the bond with your children. We actually do talk and laugh a lot when we ride.
  • Independence: Bike riding allows children to get to know their surroundings and feel apart of it.
  • Weight Loss: bike riding raises your metabolic rate, helping you keep the weight off.
  • Ageless: regular bike riders are as fit as an average person 10 years younger.
  • School: teachers report that kids who walk or cycle to school are more alert and ready to learn vs. car riders.

earl and bike

What I recently learned about are Bike Clubs. My county has one,, which has different membership levels ranging from $15-$500. I am honestly probably not going to join a club, but it’s good to know if I ever wanted tips or to meet other families that ride, it’s a source for us.

Continue enjoying your summer…. and take some time to ride your bike.

President Obama Takes a Walk and Surprises Everybody

I am a true fan of my President and First Lady. So when I saw the video of President Obama walking down the street, I literally smiled so big, it was like I was there.

Apparently, The President was heading over to the nearby Department of the Interior and decided to walk instead of take the Official White House transportation.

He actually walked over instead. What’s so cool to me is that I actually know where he is because I have been on that actual space just last month for the Easter Egg Hunt!

As he walked, he met all types of people who were not expecting to see the President of the Free World this day. I laughed out loud when one lady said, “OMG! Are you real? People are going to think you are wax!”

You could feel the energy of the people when they realized the President was right in front of them. Man, that is a day I would never forget if I were them. Well, he was right in front of me for the Easter Egg Hunt, I just didn’t get to meet him like they did. Lucky folks!!

How the Target Cartwheel App Saved Me Money on Diapers #TargetColors

I have been #TeamTarget for many years. If you read my last post about Target, I told you the secrets of the clearance rack but why am I pinching myself because I just learned about the Cartwheel app. I could’ve been saving more money!

Today, I used the app for diapers and the savings were so good. Here are the steps I took to save money & gain a Target gift card at the end of my purchase.

  • First – download the Cartwheel app to your phone.
  • Second – click on “all offers” and select the category you are interested in. For example; I selected baby, which opened a new window with all baby categories.  If you don’t know the category but just want to see if something is on sale, select scan, then scan the item. If it’s on sale, the discount will appear.
  • Third – Select the item you want to add to your list. I selected diapers because that is what I needed today. On the app they were %5 off. It doesn’t initially seem like a lot, but watch the savings add up!

  • Fourth – I find the diapers in the store and lookie here, they are not only on sale but if I buy two boxes – I will get a $15 gift card! For the record, we buy the Target brand diapers because they are quality diapers. You get more in the box and keep more $ in your pocket.

  • Fifth – I go to check out and she scans my phone’s barcode to get the 5% off.
  • Sixth – ** More Savings Alert ** If you have a Target RedCard you can save an additional 5% off your selected item and your entire purchase! That is exactly what we did.

Let’s review. We purchased two pack of diapers for $34.99 each which totaled $69.98.  Minus the Cartwheel 5% off (-3.49), then minus the RedCard 5% (-3.32) totaling $62.87. I was then handed a $15 Gift card to use on a future purchase. If you take $15 from 62.87, I spent $47.87.

Not to mention the additional 5% off savings I received on the additional item I purchased because of the RedCard!

Great great savings! Do you use the Cartwheel app? Do you have a RedCard? Who knew these great apps  & combinations existed! Also, you can still use manufacturers coupons on top of these deals for more savings! They have awaken the savings beast in me!

Thrift Day Thursday : GoodWill Find

Living here in Atlanta, it seems like its a thrift store on every block! I am not complaining because I enjoy finding gems for a great price. One of my favorite thrift stores is the Goodwill, because they are so organized. I hate going into a store and you don’t know if you should go left or right. In Goodwill, everything is clearly labeled, priced and positioned. Goodwill’s usually have their items color coordinated too!

I actually bought this from a Goodwill in Florida during our Christmas vacation. When I saw it, I wasn’t sure if it was cute or crazy. I was drawn to it because my son’s bday is on the 4th of July. I thought this would be so cute to wear on his birthday. We usually go to the 4th of July parade and/or city celebration.

The dress was only $4 and is just simply cute to me. I was in a rush this morning and couldn’t decide what to wear. Then this cute dress popped out at me. I had 15 minutes to leave and couldn’t find any shoes that would go just perfect with it, so I put on my cute Target sandals.

The fabric is so light and it doesn’t fit too snug but still gives me a feminine feel. Do I look like a flight attendant? Now that I think about it, I look like I work for Delta Airlines!

What’s your favorite thrift store and why?

My Last Day Eating McDonald’s Fries With 17 Ingredients!

When I was a young lad, McDonald’s was the go-to restaurant. My mom took us there all the time. My choices ranged from the triple cheeseburger, Big Mac or chicken nuggets. The most important thing I had to have were the French Fries! I love fries and growing up, McDonald’s fries were the top on my list.

Fast forward umpteen years later. I am now a wife & mother to my own children who also have come to love McDonald’s. Over the last 5 years, we have been doing better with healthy eating and researching what’s in our food. With movies like Food Inc. and Forks & Knives, I have cut down my meat intake to a couple of times a week.

For the most part, I don’t eat at fast food restaurants anymore. It’s that 2% of the time that I would stop and get my old faithful french fries. Well, McDonald’s published its french fry ingredients and it’s a list of 17!  At home, I make the best fries. I even made a video about how I make Oven Fried Potatoes. I use two ingredients, Potatoes and Olive Oil. Why does McDonalds need 17 ingredients?

After reading an article (the bulk is below), I decided I have seen my last days with their French Fries. I bought some and although they tasted the same as they always did, they tasted different because I now knew what I was eating.

I am so tired of companies producing foods that have ingredients that harm us. No, it might not harm us the day we eat it but over the long haul, it will add up in our system. It makes you wonder why so many people are sick or just have health issues. I understand companies are in the business “to make money” but it is at the risk of your customers health? It seems so.

Mario Dupuis, a production manager at McCain Foods in New Brunswick, discussed where the potatoes are washed, peel and cut. They are also blanched to “remove natural sugars” that would cause color variations then soaked in dextrose for an even color. There’s also an ingredient to prevent greying, drying to remove excess moisture and a quick-fry for 45 to 60 seconds before the fries are frozen for shipping.

Here are the 17 Ingredients: Potatoes, canola oil, hydrogenated soybean oil, safflower oil, natural flavor (vegetable source), dextrose, sodium acid pyrophosphate (maintain color), citric acid (preservative), dimethylpolysiloxane (antifoaming agent) and cooked in vegetable oil (Canola oil, corn oil, soybean oil, hydrogenated soybean oil with THBQ, citric acid and dimethylpolysiloxane) and salt (silicoaluminate, dextrose, potassium iodide).

Many of the ingredients above are hazardous to human health, including those which are genetically modified (canola oil, corn oil, soybean oil), hydrogenated (soybean oil), chemically preserved and antifoaming (THBQ, citric acid, dimethylpolysiloxane), and artificially colored (sodium acid pyrophosphate).  Source.

Sears Shop Your Way Introduces The Get Advice Feature

“This is a sponsored post. I am a Shop Your Way blogger and all opinions are my own.”

Sears stays on the cutting edge of customer service. They have now introduced a Get Advice feature at Here’s how it works (video below)

Get Advice utilizes the current online and mobile shopping apps that customers already have & allows customers more access to Sears stores/associates nationwide. It’s actually like you can talk to a live associate from anywhere, and if one in Georgia doesn’t know the answer, one in Illinois might be the one to help.

I think this is especially good for women, because we no longer have to reply on the man in our life to FIX or KNOW EVERYTHING about EVERYTHING in our house. We can click on our app and now get advice on the best baby cribs to replacing the refrigerator water filters. Also, there are millions in the Shop Your Way Community, which are also available to chime in with their advice! The community helping the community! Love that!

Get Advice (Question) 1[1]

Any member can post a question or an answer and vote on the most helpful responses.

  • Members can go to and tap “Ask a Question” in the Get Advice section or directly from a product page.
  • They can then type their question and see if an answer pops up while they type.
  • If not, they can simply follow the prompts to post their question.
  • Once the question is submitted, the answers start flowing in from store associates across the country.
