Disney Pixar’s COCO Reinforces Life Lessons for My Children

The first thing I noticed about the Disney Pixar movie COCO, is that there is a boy lead, Miguel. I immediately like that because I have 2 sons, and it’s good to have a Disney movie that they could easily see themselves in.

Whenever we see a movie as a family, I always use our time driving home from the theatre as a way to see what lessons or takeaways my children have. Here are a few we talked about after seeing COCO:

  1. Everything is not what it seems. There are times when something is right in front of you and you learn that you’ve been looking at something different the entire time. Friendships, relationships, and situations are not always what they look like. The unfortunate part is you might actually have to experience pain to learn that lesson. If you can pay attention to your gut when it’s pushing you to go this way, or watch out for the red flags that continue to show up, you can save yourself a lot of heartache.
  2. Work hard for what you want in life. There are very rare circumstances when everything you want out of life is just given to you on a silver platter, with no work or effort involved. For the other 98% of us, we need to work for it. We need to work hard. We love our children and want them to have more than we did, and we give them more than we had. They still need to know the importance of working for what they want. There is no greater pleasure than getting something yourself with your own elbow grease. You cherish it more.
  3. Family is important. My husband actually liked this part the most. He’s from a huge family, and both of his parents are 1 of 10. He expressed how the movie showed no matter what you’re going through, your family should want the best for you. Family matters. Right now my two oldest children are in the bickering phase. I often wonder when it will end. They love each other one minute and are fighting the next minute. We want to make sure our children know that family always sticks together.

What is CoCo about?

Despite his family’s baffling generations-old ban on music, Miguel (voice of newcomer Anthony Gonzalez) dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz (voice of Benjamin Bratt). Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead following a mysterious chain of events. Along the way, he meets charming trickster Hector (voice of Gael García Bernal), and together, they set off on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel’s family history.
