Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Debuts on the Sea
The best part about living in Florida is being about 45 minutes from Disney! I wouldn’t have imaged the experiences my family would have at Disney over the last year.
Last week, I was invited to spend the day on the Disney Dream Cruise Ship. Of course when I initially got the email, I thought I was going on a cruise and let out the biggest scream.

I was going on the Disney Dream, but only for the day. Smaller scream, but still a scream.
We went on our first Disney Cruise earlier this year (Feb 2017), The Wonder. Our children still talk about this cruise and I dream of going back soon. One of the highlights of the cruise were the nightly shows, The Golden Mickeys, Disney’s Believe, and our favorite show was Frozen. I was blown away at how realistic Disney made this movie into a stage play and kept the audiences attention with great singing, on stage tricks, and more.
A tale as old as time takes the stage on the Disney Dream with “Beauty and the Beast,” an original musical production. The enchanting fairytale takes audiences on a sweeping journey to discover the power of transformation through true love and courage. This new production of “Beauty and the Beast” celebrates the romance, adventure and magic of the live-action film, weaving in the charm and nostalgia of the award-winning animated feature.
Beauty and the Beast on the Disney Dream debuted November 6, 2017, on it’s 3 night cruise to the Bahamas. This musical production is inspired by the live action movie that came out earlier this year. I knew I was in for a treat as I sat in the 1,340 seat Walt Disney Theatre and watched a childhood classic come to life right before my eyes.
Bringing a classic to life isn’t always easy. It takes months or sometimes years to get it just right. After the play, we were escorted into another theater to interview a panel that included an all star team which shared how they made this possible:
- Connor Gallagher, director and choreographer Connor Gallagher (“Tangled: The Musical,” “Found”)
- Sara Wordsworth, writer (“Frozen, A Musical Spectacular,” Broadway’s “In Transit”)
- Jason Sherwood, set designer (“Paint Your Wagon,” “Frozen, A Musical Spectacular”)
- Aaron Rhyne, video designer (“Frozen, A Musical Spectacular,” Broadway’s “Anastasia”)
We learned that the stage play uses a music box theme to guide you through the musical. Belle’s father starts the play with his music box, telling you the story of the Beast and how he was cursed. As a spectator, you start the journey of Belle and the her love story through this music box.
These panelist have created an amazing 115 minute play that includes the most creative transformative moving set with the highest quality LED screened background. It allows your imagination to take you into each scene without skipping a beat.
Beauty and the Beast features songs from the original movie, and two new songs “How Does a Moment Last Forever” and “Days in the Sun.” by Menken and lyricist Tim Rice.
After the panel discussion, we were treated a wonderful lunch on the ship. I promise, I could get use to this kind of living.
