With the wisp of a wand, all of my children will graduate college, marry their soul mates, are successful business owners and will never struggle! That is if we lived in a perfect world. Unfortunately we do not, but as parents we spend our years trying to make sure our children are at least better off than we are. I am no different.

I lived with this woman until I was 7 years old. After I moved out, I spoke with her on the phone every day through my college years. Every thing I did, I would wonder what would she think. Would she be proud? Would this make her smile? Would she approve? She is my grandmother. My grandmother was my first earth angel.

Rising Above It: My Unexpected Road to College

“Mom! Mom! I got accepted in to Alabama State University!” “Wait, what? Hold on girl.” My mom puts her friend on hold and asks me what I said. “Mom, I got into college!” “Oh. Girllllll! Ok.” She gets back on the phone, “Girl, Bernetta has gotten into college.” And she went back to cleaning. I actually don’t remember us having another conversation about it after that. I remember standing there excited for myself but also wondering why my mom didn’t appear as excited for me. I wondered why she didn’t get off the phone to discuss the where’s, the how’s, the when’s of a possible life changing experience. I wondered why, at the moment I was on top of the world but also felt alone there.
