Fab 5 Series: Top 5 Spring Dresses for Moms, Especially #5

I love a nice dress! Don’t you?  Spring Dresses

I love Spring time because I get to go into my closet and just grab a dress and not worry about cold weather, stockings, tights  or even boots! The hardest decision that accompanies wearing a dress are what accessories & shoes to select! Which really isn’t that hard of a choice.

All Dresses are NOT Created Equal:

Just because you are a wife and/or mother, there are ways to still dress and feel like, “I’ve still got it!” Sometimes as mothers, we let ourselves get into the “Mommy Dress Rut” and we take care of the children first and take care of ourselves last. Well, not this Spring!

Here are 5 dresses that you should add to your wardrobe for different occasions of the season:

Girlfriends Dress:

As a busy woman (and everything that includes; wife, mom, blogger, & much more) I look forward to a Girls Night Out. These nights allow us to catch up, laugh, be social and basically cut loose. Whether it’s a lunch date with the girls, a Saturday night dinner or a Sunday afternoon brunch – find a perfect dress to make you feel pretty and carefree.  Dress below: Goodwill $6

top_5_spring dresses

 Saturday Dress:

On the weekends we are usually handling extra business or taking our children to their social events (birthday parties, sporting games, & play dates). Well, who said you had to be frumpy about it! You can still wear an adorable dress with the kids on the go. Saturday dresses are made for comfortable cuteness! Dress below: Last Chance Thrift $4

Thrifted Dress:

It’s all about the price tag for me! I like nice things, but I like a nice price tag too and when you have a family to care for – you sometimes cut corners to keep more coins in your pocket. A thrift store (Goodwill, Salvation Army, or local shops) can allow you to stay stylish for what seems like change! I’ve found so many adorable dresses between the price range of $2.00-$12.00, that people now try to guess where and how much! The cool thing is, by the time it hits the thrift store shelves – it’s now one of a kind! Dress below: Goodwill $12 (because it was a formal, most dresses are 5.99)

Mother’s Day Dress:

Whether you go to church on Mother’s Day or your family treats you to a nice lunch, you still want to look great. I’ve found great Mother’s Day dresses at Ross, Target and even department stores. It’s all about how good you feel when you put the dress on. This is a day you celebrate being a mom, so of course I rock a dress that makes me feel beautiful and motherly! Motherly doesn’t mean, homely either! Dress below: SB Boutique (gifted, but $200)

and last by not least….

Freak’em Dress:

Beyonce made this term famous from one her songs, but as a fan – I realized I had a few in my closet too. Now, freak ’em dresses are not to be worn with the kids around! Unless, you are on your way to drop them off at the babysitter. A freak ’em dress is usually worn on date night with your husband, lover, or boo. This dress lets him know:

  • You still got it
  • You still KNOW you got it
  • You are more than just a mom
  • And those workouts are not in vain   Dress below: ASOS $55

Ladies, add these dresses to your Spring wardrobe and you will be ready for every possible occasion in style!

Please answer this, what dress category do you need to make sure you have?

Atlanta African American Bloggers You Should Know

When I started blogging in 2010, I didn’t know any African American women who blogged. Not a single person. The more I blogged, the more I networked, which allowed me to meet some great bloggers who have become good friends.

I started BernettaStyle in 2012, and came out of my shell. Thank God I did, because I have been able to meet and become friends with some amazing African American Bloggers. As a blogger living in Atlanta, it seems like we get to experience & share everything with our readers first. One thing I have come to enjoy, is that the African American blogging community in Atlanta is small (everyone knows everyone), but it’s also huge (there are hundreds of AA bloggers here).

In the Atlanta African American Blogging Community, you can’t go to an event or work on a brand campaign without seeing another AA Blogger you know. Although we live in Atlanta, our reach is worldwide. On the list below, the blogs are a variety of Parenting, Fashion, Beauty, Photography, Food, Travel and more. I love that! Companies reach out to these ladies, when they want to get their message out because these women deliver.

African American Consumer Facts Source:

  • African American population is an economic force to be reckoned with, with a projected buying power of $1.1 trillion by 2015.
  • African-American consumers growth outpaces the rest of the population by 30 percent.
  • There are 43 million African Americans in the United States, second largest racial minority in the country BUT even with these impressive numbers and buying power most mainstream advertisers are not inclusive, do not include African Americans in media and marketing plans and have underestimated the market size.

I have been fortunate enough to meet, work with, attend an event, and/or become friends with all of these ladies.

White: This Year’s Summers Color and 5 Ways to Wear it : Simple Summer Series

Many of us are excited to celebrate the summertime. After all, summer is a long-anticipated time of the year, and it would only make sense for us to want to take in all that it has to offer.

When it comes to fashion, summer is one of the best times to show off your knowledge. Part of fashion includes staying up to date with critical trends, whether they include patterns, colors, or styles. This year, one color has made a tremendous impact, and that color just so happens to be white.

If wearing white isn’t one of your strong points, then here is a helpful guide with five ways to wear white.

1. Light, Airy Skirts

So, you aren’t sure what to do with that gorgeous black and white crop top? One good solution is to wear a light and airy skirt. Try to go with skirts that show a little bit of poof, but not too much. You might also want to opt for skirts that have a little bit of embroidery in its detail, since this will give it a casual, carefree, and fun girly look.

2. Cropped Shorts

Ready to go to the beach? Don’t forget to hit the sand without your pair of cropped white shorts. Perfect for withstanding the scorching summer sun, your cropped shorts will prove to be two things: comfortable and fashionable. Pair it with your bikini top or wear it with your favorite tank. Just don’t forget to apply your sunscreen!

3. Swimsuits – of all Kinds

If you plan on fitting in with the hot summer fashion trend of wearing white, do not forget to apply this rule to your swimsuits! This year, there are a ton of bathing suit trends. Try wearing a super-cute and retro-inspired bikini with a long hat, or even opt for the ever-fascinating monokini. If you want to stay classic, then do not forget the more well-known options of bikinis and one-piece bathing suits.

4. Accessories

Just because you want white to be the focal color of your wardrobe doesn’t mean that you have to forget about the accessories. This year, remember to purchase big, bold sunglasses in white and to bring it all together with a large floppy hat. You could also go a little chic and wear white bangles around your wrist, complemented by a nice pair of white high heels. (However, make sure that your whole outfit isn’t white!)

5. Maxi Dresses

One summer favorite is the popular maxi dress. This is the perfect dress to go for a nice walk in during the hot summertime and is perfect for barbeques or other fun summer celebrations. Don’t forget to accessorize with more colorful accessories if you choose to go with a white maxi dress.

Summer is a ton of fun, and your wardrobe can reflect that. When you have a great summer outfit to show around your friends, you’ll feel confident and happy. Try out white this year as a fashion statement option, whether your wear a white embroidered skirt or a retro-themed swimsuit.

How are you wearing your summer white?

Follow AMIClub Wear online at Facebook, Twitter,  they have a wide variety of options to choose from with a wide price range. I actually have my summer white bathing suit from here, and I like how I look in it!

Simple Summer Series #3 : Benefits of Biking w/ the Babies

10169290_10203150343953005_3260483702776640810_nSummer is in full effect and the kids love the outdoors. Last year my two oldest children learned to ride their bikes, and as you can guess, they want to ride them all the time.

I am thankful for a neighborhood with side walks. We can ride around our whole subdivision and I don’t have to worry about them riding in the street, unless I am with them. I did catch my son riding in the street, like he was grown one evening. That didn’t end well for him!

Bailee and bike

For Mother’s Day, my family bought me a bike! I was so excited and use it often. My children and I like to ride around our neighborhood together in the evening after dinner or early morning (weekends) before breakfast.

Here are a few benefits to bike riding with your children:

  • Improve your fitness: bike riding tones the booty, thighs, tummy and reduces cellulite.
  • Relationship: the interaction improves the bond with your children. We actually do talk and laugh a lot when we ride.
  • Independence: Bike riding allows children to get to know their surroundings and feel apart of it.
  • Weight Loss: bike riding raises your metabolic rate, helping you keep the weight off.
  • Ageless: regular bike riders are as fit as an average person 10 years younger.
  • School: teachers report that kids who walk or cycle to school are more alert and ready to learn vs. car riders.

earl and bike

What I recently learned about are Bike Clubs. My county has one,, which has different membership levels ranging from $15-$500. I am honestly probably not going to join a club, but it’s good to know if I ever wanted tips or to meet other families that ride, it’s a source for us.

Continue enjoying your summer…. and take some time to ride your bike.

{Videos} Simple Summer Series #2 – XHIT Daily Workout For Women Rocks!

Last week we started the Simple Summer Series with Hydration and how simple it is to make your own infused water with Lemon & Mint. This week we are going to continue on the path of what’s good for your body; exercise.

I love the phrase Summer Bodies are made in the Winter. To a degree, that is very true. You can’t exercise on Monday and expect to fit and fab by Friday. It takes time and consistency and it’s never to late to start. Even though Summer is here, it’s still important to maintain all the hard work you put in over the Fall, Winter & Spring.

I am a mother of three, work & blog so I have to make exercising apart of my schedule. I do not go to a gym, but workout at home. The time I would spend driving to the gym and back, I would have already completed my workout. I ride my bike, and workout with apps on my iPad and videos from YouTube. Today I am going to share with you my newest find; XHIT Daily.

Xhit has hundreds of FREE videos on Youtube & on their website. What I love about XHit is that their videos are catered to women. Their videos are broken down in categories:

  • Celebrity Workouts: Fitness and weight loss secrets from the stars to sculpt and tone your body into a red carpet ready machine.

Check out their Michelle Obama Workout!!

  • Victoria’s Secret Model Workouts: Ever wondered how to get a model body? They have the inside scoop on getting the perfect calves and the booth of an Angel.

  • Lower Body Exercises: Look great in shorts with their butt and thigh toning workouts!
  • Core Strengthening Exercises: Sculpt that six pack with these core workouts that will leave your abs muscles screaming!
  • Eating and Exercise: Check out these healthy recipes plus a few workouts to work off some of your favorite high-calorie foods.

Their videos also range in time, which I love. I can do an 8 minute abs video, a 15 minute Cardio workout then finish up with a 14 minute Leg Workout. I can target what I want in the time frame I need.

Remember, consistency is key and again, it’s never to late to start!

What is your Simple Summer Exercise Regimen? Have you ever heard of XHIT Daily?

Fashion Friday : What I Wore for the Shar Bates Panel

This Tuesday (4/1/14), I was delighted to be a panelist on The Shar Bates Show Pilot. The event took place at Bar One, owned by Peter Thomas of The Real Housewives of Atlanta. The topic of the evening was “Who Wears The Pants in the Relationship?” The real question is, what did I wear?

Blue dress

I got this cute little Blue & White number from SB Boutique. When I saw it in the store, I was like “Come to mamma!” I wore it with some gold wedges and gold square earrings (also from SB Boutique).

Blue Dress 2

It fit so snug, that I made sure I worked out and ate right all week to look good in this dress. There was no room for error, because the fabric is unforgiving.

The main topic of discussion were relationships:

  • What are the man’s role/expectations in the relationship?
  • What is a woman’s key role/responsibility in the relationship?
  • Do you judge relationship roles based off of past experiences?
  • Do men and women communicate properly?
  • For women: Do list really work?

The first live recorded and streaming Shar Bates Show Live was a great success.  The recent panel discussion hosted by radio show host Shar Bates included myself, Bernetta, DJ Fadelf, DruSkey, and Koereyelle DuBose. Each panelist provided their insight on relationships and gender roles in dating/marriage at the intimate barONE Tapas Lounge.  Audience members asked questions and spoke passionately about “Who Wears The Pants In The Relationship?”

Soft butter colag

I even received some Soft Butter love from Shar Bates, DruSkey & and a new friend I met on IG. I hope they like it, stay soft & smell sweet.

Free Atlanta Zoo Tickets Secret!

In my family, my husband is the one that researches our family trips, outings and more. Why? Because he finds the best deals for us. He calls the companies, ask 50 million questions, reads the fine print and booyah – we have a deal!! We also just got a great family 4 pack for Six Flags with added Gold Member benefits because he got the right person on the phone! #GOHUBBY! #LivingSmart

Well, yesterday he called me with another great find, FREE ZOO ATLANTA TICKETS for our family of 5 (really just 4, because the baby is free)! How Does It Work:

    • You must visit your local public library to obtain the Zoo Atlanta Family Pass.
    • Adults with a valid library card from any branch of a participating public library system throughout the state of Georgia* may access the Zoo Atlanta Family Pass. One pass is available for checkout at each participating branch and may be checked out once per year, per household.
  • Check out the Zoo Atlanta Family Pass DVD at your local library. (No self-checkout; DVD must be checked out at the library front desk.) When you return the DVD to your library, you will receive a receipt. Please save this receipt; it is required for Zoo admission. The pass is valid for 7 days from the date of the receipt showing the return of the DVD.
    • Present your Zoo Atlanta Family Pass receipt at the Zoo Atlanta front gate for admission.
  • Pass is valid for two adults (ages 12 and up) and up to two children (ages 3-11); standard general admission will apply to families larger than four. • If the DVD is lost or damaged, a $30 replacement fee will be charged by the library system. Overdue fines will be charged for late returns.

What Happened For Us:  Some libraries actually let you watch the DVD right there in the Library and you will be able to get the Zoo Pass on the spot! That’s what happened to my husband, he went there to watch the DVD and something happened at the library where he wasn’t able to watch the DVD but he still was given the pass!! With their normal rates for a family of 5, we are saving $78!! Isn’t it worth a trip to the library?

Admission Rates
Adult (12+) $21.99
Child (3-11) $16.99
Child 2 & Under FREE

We will be going to the Zoo either Saturday or Sunday depending on what’s going on.

Nutrition Fact Labels Changes Are Clear

New Nutriton Fact

Do you really pay attention the Nutrition Fact Labels? I do. Now more than ever since I want to know what is really in my food. These labels have not been updated in 20 years so the U.S. Food and Drug Administration proposed to update the Nutrition Facts label for packaged foods to reflect the latest scientific information. The new label would replace the out-of-date servings sizes to better reflect how much we really eat and it gives us a fresh new look as well. It highlights the thing we want to see first, like serving size and calorie count! Continue Reading
