This summer I did a DNA test to find out where in Africa I’m from. It was a moment I will never forget and always cherish. I think over the last few years there has been a surge in African Americans wanting to know more about their heritage and expressing a strong desire to identify with our culture.
I love seeing “us” walk around being unapologetically black. We love sporting our African earrings, wraps, prints and now bags.
AFRICA ON MY BACK
My son was sent a beautiful handmade backpack from Africa On My Back, which he proudly sported the school the very next day.
Africa On My Back is a celebration of past, present, and future. Their durable and lightweight Kente-print backpacks provide students and professionals with a stylish, yet functional, connection to African culture and heritage. Their backpacks and other accessories are handcrafted by artisans in Ghana, West Africa.
Africa On My Back was founded by Shannette Prince and her two sons, Isaiah and Cameron, following her trip to the continent during the summer of 2016. While there she met talented, innovative, and brilliant people who have enormous potential but few opportunities to showcase those talents.
BRILLIANT BLACK BOYS INITIATIVE
Through their backpack sales, Africa On My Back supports global experiences for African American boys who are talented, innovative and full of potential.
With each backpack purchase, you are providing these young men with an opportunity to develop a sense of self-identity, gain international exposure, and be inspired to think globally.
I love this initiative and how they provide an opportunity for young African American men to see our Motherland.
