Every year we get together for my husband’s family reunion and every year it’s at a new location. His family is very big, so we usually need to have a location that can accommodate everyone while giving people their own space. This year we enjoyed Lake Louisa State Park in Florida.
Lake Louisa, which was originally designated as a Seminole Indian Reservation in 1823, is now a 4,500 acre park that is noted for it’s beautiful lakes and scenic views.
Each family stayed in their own 2 bedroom cabin for our reunion, which gave us privacy but we were close enough to each other for the BIG family gatherings.
The part of the park we stayed in had 20 cabins. Our family used up at least 7 of those cabins. There is no wifi on the park and no tv’s in the cabins. So come out expecting to entertain yourself the old fashion way, pure family time.
The rooms are not the most modern but they are exactly what you would expect from a cabin experience.
You are responsible for your own food, drinks, soap and well basically everything!
We actually brought our two nephews with us, so two of the children stayed in the room with double beds and the other two stayed on the pull out couch.
We got up early on Saturday morning and went fishing! We had an OMG moment when we saw the sign about the alligators, and then we actually saw an alligator!
My daughter actually caught it on the hook, but there was no way we were pulling it up! She then went on to catch 5 fish!
Lake Louisa, along with Hammond Lake and Dixie Lake are the state park’s most accessible lakes, which provide opportunities for fishing, canoeing and kayaking.
I mentioned that there must be wildlife out there because it’s too much open space and mini forest. I was right! It’s home to white-tail deer, bobcats, fox squirrel, raccoon, gopher tortoise, bald eagle, and osprey.
My husband and I agreed that we could see ourselves coming back with just our family. There was still a huge part of the park we didn’t get to see. We had free passes to go canoeing but didn’t have enough time. It’s a peaceful place and allows you to experience quietness with nature in a whole new way. It’s truly a world away from the world.
