“Bernetta, do you want to see Mary J with us next week?”, Lamar asked as I worked.
“Me? Meet Mary J? Sure, I can go. Thanks for asking.” I replied in a calm and cool tone, but inside was I was screaming, “I AM GOING TO MEET MARY J. BLIGE!”
Like millions of others, I have been a fan of Mary J. Blige since What’s the 411 in 1992. I was a Junior in high school and was an immediate fan. I would watch her on videos and award shows and come to school the next day with my hair like hers. It became my thing! My friends waited to see my version of Mary J.
Over the years, many of her songs have added to the soundtrack of my life. I am now in my late 30s, married 11 years with 3 children, and I am still a hardcore Mary J. fan.
I remember volunteering at the Fox Theater (Atlanta) in 2000 at her concert just to see her perform for free. Then this past year, I got to see her perform again at the Essence Awards in New Orleans. I sat in section 132, well stood in section 132, the entire show dancing and singing every song. The entire time I kept thinking, “Man! That is Mary J!”
So of course when my employer asked me if I wanted to meet her, I would reply, “YES!”
THE LONDON SESSIONS
Shortly after the Essence Festival, Mary J. Blige moved to London for one month to record her new album. She recorded a record with the London group Disclosure, and it was a mega hit. When the song was played in America, it became a hit with the younger crowd as well. The sound was something new to Mary and she wanted to see if this sound & energy was something she could recreate and tap into for herself.
Mary J. allowed the cameras to follow her London journey. The documentary shows her as she writes song after song, collaborates, sings and even have a come to Jesus moment when she first hears the song Doubt. She teamed up with London’s newest & hottest producers: Disclosure, Naughty Boy, Jimmy Napes, Emeli Sandé, and Sam Smith. Mary reveals how free she is in London to just be, and she recorded her 13th album in just 10 days!
THE VISION BOARD
I created my vision board in 2010 and over the years quite a few things have come to past. I always get excited when I can check things off of my list. This year has been an amazing year, including me being in the presence of The President & First Lady of the United States & Oprah! Both were on my Vision Board, including Mary J. Blige.
After viewing The London Sessions, I thought I was going to be able to meet & greet with her. I had my question ready, “What Legacy do you want to leave?” But when it was time to actually talk, I just told her how I was a true fan. I expressed how she rocked at Essence and was my Diana Ross. I then expressed how much it meant to me to actually finally meet her. She hugged me and thanked me.
She was so fab! I wanted to ask what kind of make-up did she use because her skin was flawless, but I didn’t.
THE MUSIC
Mary J. Blige’s new cd has a release date of December 2nd, but you can pre-order it on iTunes now. I already have a few favorite songs on this album; Whole Damn Year, Nobody Love You & a few more.
Do you have a vision board? Do you plan to get the new Mary J. Album?
