Eyes closed.
Head nodding.
Glass of wine in my hand. (I don’t drink often, but if I did…)
This is how I see myself enjoying this new Mary J. Blige album after my first time listening to it. It’s honestly one of the those rare albums that you can listen to from the first track to the 10th track.
Earlier this month, Mary J. Blige visited Atlanta and hosted a screening of her documentary, The London Sessions. I was blessed enough to get a few seconds of her time, and tell her that I am a fan!
She was genuine and it was a moment I will never forget. I mentioned to a friend, that after watching this documentary – I definitely want this album.
Mary J. Blige did something different for this album. She actually moved to London for 1 month to record her album. She teamed up with London’s newest & hottest producers: Disclosure, Naughty Boy, Jimmy Napes, Emeli Sandé, and Sam Smith. While recording her record, she allowed cameras to follow her journey. She reveals how free she was in London to just be, and recorded her 13th album in just 10 days!
A few days later, an opportunity came along for me to review the entire album! I was excited to hear the full version of Nobody But You, Doubt, and Therapy! In the documentary, they have so many jam sessions, that I really wanted to get the album and feel what they felt.
My Favorite Song:
Nobody But You
The album is a different sound for Mary, but you still hear her. This song has a deep base, house music feel (I guess it’s that Chicago in me) that makes you want to move, but slow enough to pay attention to the words so you’d want to sing along. The music shows progression and I can easily see more artist following her lead.
Mary J. Blige has been in the music business since I was in high school and I am going to my 20th year reunion this week! She stays on top of her game and continues to reinvent herself in addition to using her life experiences to make wonderful music.
Mary is a woman just like us. She has loved, lost, gained and renewed. She gives that to us in her music and that’s why we can relate. 20 years later, she is still making music that draws new fans and keeps the old one singing along.
Her new album will be a hit for sure. If you know a MJB fan in your life, surprise them with her album for the holidays. They will love this new sound.
