The next Love Jones, really?
I know! That’s a big claim because Love Jones is a classic and one of my top two favorite movies. I can easily see this being a classic for the young 20 somethings, that are new to love and really understanding what a soulmate is or can be.
I was a lucky girl a few weeks ago, because my husband and I were invited to cover the Atlanta red carpet of Beyond the Lights and meet the star actor, director and writer.
When I originally saw the trailer, I thought it was going to be a cute movie. I wanted to see it to support the director, actors and because it’s an African American film. I didn’t expect to LOVE THIS MOVIE. But, I ended up loving this movie.
CHEMISTRY: From the beginning of this movie, I was into the story line. From the moment these two made eye contact, it was something there. It makes you wonder, was it something off camera too. Hmmmm, you never know! Their chemistry was just like Nina and Darius (Love Jones), obvious but unspoken. And although it was obvious, there was a road they both needed to travel to before they were able to enjoy the desires of their heart.
MORE THAN A MOVIE: For me, a good movie keeps you thinking about it after it’s over. It provokes you to do something different or even evaluate where you are. This movie is about more than finding love, but finding yourself and living in your truth. The characters were living someone else’s dream, and although successful, Noni was empty inside. Just a shell.
I am learning more and more that life is too short not to be authentically yourself.
Unfortunately, when you create something that isn’t based on the whole truth – there is rough path to happiness when you decide to actually live your truth. The good part is, you eventually get there.
I left the movie smiling.
I left the movie thinking about love and what it feels like to be truly in love with someone and they feel the exact same way. Amazing.
I left the movie thinking about my authenicity. Am I being 100% authentic? And if I’m not, what is it costing me?
