My Black is Beautiful: Learning to Love the Skin I’m In. #BIAJourney #MotherhoodMonday

Screen Shot 2014-06-29 at 8.21.49 PMIt’s almost that time! It’s almost time for this Mommy to head to New Orleans and attend my first Essence Festival! I am so excited to be able to experience this trip with my BFF, Aseelah. This is also her first time too! It’s the 20th year celebration of the Essence Festival and Prince is the headliner. Can you say, “Good times, nothing but good times!”

My Great News: What I am equally excited about is that I have been selected as a My Black is Beautiful (MBIB) Social Media Correspondent on behalf of Niche Parent Network & Conference!!

“My Black is Beautiful is a community of black women that celebrates everything that makes them beautiful.”

I really learned to love the skin in I am when I went to college. I don’t remember the defining moment, but I just finally realized that I was pretty just the way I was. When I was younger, I didn’t have an issue with color until my mother told me, “You are jealous of your brother because is light skin!” I never thought that I was, but then started to wonder, “Am I?”

My mother and brother were both lighter than myself. I found myself wishing I was their color more and more after she repeatedly made that statement. I even found myself liking only light boys as I grew older. All that changed when I went to college. I went to Alabama State University, and HBCU where there were gorgeous shades of all different colors (of  black) from all different states. We were all so different and it taught me to appreciate who I am.

I no longer looked at my skin color and wished I was something I wasn’t. I am beautiful just the way I am.
