Last month I ran my first 5k with the Dirty Girls! I ran the Dirty Girl Mud run at Lake Lanier with the Mud Puppies, my teammates. I knew we would get dirty, I just didn’t know how dirty!
I knew it would be a lot of women joining in the fun, but I was floored at the hundreds I actually saw. There were women from the entire state of Georgia that came to get dirty. I wanted to participate in the Dirty Girl Mud Run to experience a 5K run & have some fun. Along the way I learned 3 lessons that will bring me back next year.
There are 3 things you can expect to happen when you run the Dirty Girl Mud Run.
1. Expect to get dirty. I saw all the pictures of women swimming in mud and for a brief moment I thought I could avoid it. When I actually started the Mud Run, there was no way around getting dirty.
Actually, you have the choice to participate in each obstacle or go around it. Where is the fun in that? If I go around every obstacle, just so I wouldn’t get dirty then why am I out there! I let myself get muddy.
2. Expect to bond with your teammates. It seems like this event was about teams! My team, Mud Puppies, consisted of 5 ladies! We are all bloggers and get to see each other at local events and chat online but rarely get to spend an hour trying to accomplish something great together.
We decided to walk the actual 5k because everyone was at a different fitness level and we wanted to stay together. Over the course of the event, we laughed, talked, shared secrets and pushed each other press forward.
3. Expect to learn something about yourself. When I completed this race, I felt accomplished. Yes, I walked. It was still over 3 miles in a good pace. I was proud of myself and wanted to sign-up for another race. We all just jumped in the last mud pit and celebrated when we crossed the finish line.
We did it! We made it to the finish line. If I can do this, what else can I do? Anything I put my mind to, that’s what.
